When My Heart Is Overwhelmed...

I love this journey called life. I am constantly amazed at how God continuously blesses me and I am so grateful for all the beautiful experiences he gives me daily. But it is no secret that life has its fair share of challenges. We are constantly being bombarded with so many things that leave us mentally, emotionally, physically and most of all spiritually overwhelmed. Life can be filled with all sorts of pressures and stress, to the point where we feel as though our world is falling apart and we find that there is no one to whom we can turn to for help. When we reach this point in our lives our natural reaction is to do something about it and that “something” is usually the wrong thing… But this is where I want to remind you of one of my favourite verses at the moment:

“From the end of the earth will I cry to thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I." - Psalm 61:2

David knew there would be times when his heart became overwhelmed by all that life throws at him. In those moments he cried unto God knowing that no distance, whether spiritual or physical, can prevent his prayers from reaching Heaven. David also knew that he needed at least three things in these times of trouble:

1. He needed the rock
  • a place of refuge and strength
  • something strong enough to stand against life’s pressures and stress
2. He needed a rock that is “higher than I”
  • a place above himself, above his wisdom, above his abilities
3. He needed God to lead him to that rock
  • David was so overwhelmed he was unable to get to this safe and strong place by himself so he needed to be shown the way

We become so overwhelmed, so weak, that we need to be guided to this safe place. We cannot get there by ourselves. We need to be dependent on someone other than ourselves in this life, someone who is not on the same level as us. That someone is Jesus, our Rock, our Saviour, our Redeemer - the one who is above all things and able to lead us unto Himself and do for us what we cannot do for ourselves. So remember, when you are so overcome by life and all it has to offer, God is there waiting for you to cry unto him and to draw nearer unto him so that he can lead you and set your feet upon Jesus, the Rock – a firm foundation, immovable and sufficient amid all of life’s troubles.
